US Open: Kei Nishikori outlasts Andy Murray, advances to semi-finals

Kei Nishikori (6) is moving on to the semi-finals at the U.S. Open after defeating Andy Murray (2) on Wednesday afternoon. Nishikori outlasted Murray 1-6, 6-4, 4-6, 6-1, 7-5 under the roof at Arthur Ashe Stadium.

It was a sudden turn of events for Murray, who had faced little trouble advancing through the tournament and marched to a two sets to one advantage today before losing sets four and five to Nishikori. The loss marks an abrupt end to an impressive summer for Murray, who won Wimbledon in July and added a gold medal at the Rio Olympics in August.

Now Nishikori, 26, awaits the winner of Wednesday night’s matchup between Stan Wawrinka (3) and Juan Martín del Potro. This has been an impressive, but not unprecedented run for the Japanese player. In 2014, Nishikori reached the final of the U.S. Open, the best major tournament result of his career.

The other men’s singles semi-final is already set, with Novak Djokovic (1) taking on Gael Monfils (10). Both matchups will be held on Friday, with the U.S. Open final scheduled for Sunday afternoon.
